Why can't you just call the Department of Wildlife instead of risking somebody's life with your catapult??? They'll get rid of your problem humanely, and you won't get arrested.Hunting mourning doves with a catapult?
Doves are a game bird. You can only hunt them during the proper season.
Your state's Hunting Regulations will clearly state what you can, and can not hunt with. - and - they usually state that any weapons not mentioned cannot be used.
Your catapult will land you in jail if get lucky enough to hit one, and, unlucky enough to get caught doing it. Ya don't wont to become a jailbird over a few doves, do you?
Get a nice high power pellet rifle, a hunting license, and wait for the season to open. The season is closed now because they will have babies in the nest - no matter how much you don't like them - you don't want to kill the mommy bird and have the babies starve to death.
walk towards the birds indirectly and do not look at them. Angle towards them and watch them out of the corner of your eye until you are within range. Or construct some type of blind and lay out bait like bread or chips. Wait in the blind and then kill them. You can also buy dove decoys that will attract the birds.
I think he means something like what I'd call a slingshot, and it's possible, but you should call your state's game department or snag one of their pamphlets next time you're at a sporting goods store.
It's likely pretty difficult to get a bird with one. Squirrels and hares were hunted with slings (although both are game animals so you should check on them as well).
Wrong weapon. What you need are some rockets and some netting. Attach the netting to a couple rockets, fire it over their heads and trap them in the netting. Then you simply bash out their little brains with a baseball bat. Bash carefully so you don't mess up the breast meat. That's the good part.
The best way to get rid of them would be to buy yourself a pellet rifle or a shotgun. By doing that the doves will have to come up with a different strategies to annoy you.
catapults are bad, m'kay?
they can be cool, but do not pack the necessary energy to take anything humanely. Get a pellet gun or a real gun.
Or you can bend a couple laws and use firecrackers?
My advice is to wait for hunting season and get a shot gun. Using a catapult is not going to solve your dove problem, but it does keep them in good flying condition.
Get a pellet gun, one powerful enough in .177 (not .22 if your going for birds) to get the penetration. I recommend a storm XT or if you plan on keeping it for 40+ years a RWS 34.
